So I listened to this yesterday. Nitty Scott MC is one of my favorite underground rappers when I first came across her in 2013. Doobie x Popsicle Sticks, The Cassette Chronicles, The Boombox Diaries, and 2014′s The Art of Chill were all good to great projects. When Creature! was announced I was excited, but also worried. Most of the tracks she put out leading up to this were disappointing to me and lead me to believe she was changing her sound to be more acceptable for the mainstream.
I was right to worry because I’m not feeling Creature!. It’s not as bad as I expected, but I am still disappointed. Like I mentioned earlier her sound has changed. Creature! is filled with with those copy and paste flows a la Future, Migos, auto-tune, and weak beat. I do find the instrumental of "La Diaspora" pleasurable, but the chorus and verses did nothing for me. Zap Mama is also on this track, but she feels underutilized with very soft ad libs through the majority of the track. "For Sarah Baartman" which covers black body image was okay, the actual verses on "Write!" were decent and contained a couple of notable lyrics regarding her struggle with writing and her place in hip-hop. The song falls mainly due to the auto-tuned hook however. The rest of the songs I find no redeeming qualities.
Nitty Scott MC made some great music before, but this isn't one of them. I also noticed she dropped the MC part from her name. I guess that makes sense since there's not much emceeing on this album. I feel like I want to give this album a 5 just because I've been such a fan of her in the past, but I'll end up giving her a score just below it since there was so much I didn't enjoy.
